Snow Removal

Snow removal is one function of Public Works.

The Public Works Department is responsible for snow removal on all public streets within the City. For questions or concerns, please call the Public Works Director at (816) 316-4855 during regular business hours. In order to help improve snow removal operations, park off the streets if possible, have proper snow or all-weather tires on your vehicle, and wait to clear snow from driveways until the street has been plowed. If not possible, shovel all snow from your driveway to the right side as you are facing the street. This will lessen the amount of snow at the mouth of the drive when the snowplow comes down the street.

The City does not treat or plow private property or private streets, and does not remove snow deposited in drive approaches by street plowing. Snow removal on parking lots and sidewalks are the responsibility of the resident or property owner. The City's streets are plowed and/or sanded in the following order:

  • Priority Streets (Continuous until adverse weather conditions cease and they are cleared.)
  • Secondary Streets (Beginning after cease of adverse weather conditions and Priority Streets are safe.)

Weather terms to remember:

  • Travel Advisory - Driving conditions might be hazardous.
  • Winter Storm Watch - Conditions are favorable for a winter storm to develop.
  • Winter Storm Warning - Snowfall of 4"-6" is expected during the next 12 hour period.
  • Blizzard Warning - Snow with winds greater than 35 miles per hour and 1/4 mile or less visibility is expected.
